New Machine Investment Signals Growth

A £250,000 investment in new machinery is helping put Plastic Mouldings Northern Ltd ahead of the competition.

The vacuum forming company, based in Bishop Auckland, has made investment in a new high-performance multi-purpose 5-axis processing centre, which will enable the firm to manufacture products quicker and more cost-effectively.

Bosses say the new CNC machine will help PMN maintain its competitive rates for customers and build on its growing worldwide client base.

The state-of-the-art Biesse Materia CL gantry processing centre is especially suitable for milling operations and for cutting three-dimensional elements in the car manufacturing, aerospace and nautical fields.

The Materia CL is a range of versatile, compact, 5-axis processing centres designed to meet a wide variety of high-speed machining needs in relation to the milling of advanced and compound materials and special or stratified resins for mould models, the machining of thermoformed elements, unusually shaped three-dimensional elements, and components for the aeronautical sector, boats and the car industry.

It can be configured with four different work tables: open gridded, stratified phenolic resin grid, gridded aluminium, or gridded aluminium with “T” slots obtained from steel plates.

The new kit adds to PMN’s existing CNC facilities which also complement their range of thermoforming machines that allow them to manufacture a host of domestic and industrial parts for refrigerator liners, bath tubs and shower trays, interior and exterior automotive parts, fuel tanks and panels for special vehicles.

“We’re getting more larger jobs to manufacture, so we wanted to expand to increase our capacity,” said Production Director Mark Rigg.

“This CNC machine will allow us to keep our prices at the same level, and is part of our continued investment programme to remain competitive in the industry”.

“It will also give us more flexibility and respond quicker to customers’ demands. Lead times are getting shorter and shorter within the industry, and customers are expecting quicker deliveries.

“We are always customising our machines to give us as much flexibility as possible whatever the job, ensuring efficiency of product solutions to specific customer requirements.”

Since opening their doors in 2002, PMN have built up a leading reputation for vacuum forming parts within the automotive, medical, defence and aeronautics industries, with clients including Bentley, JCB and Rolls Royce.

Despite the impact of corona virus the company has enjoyed another record sales year, with the growth showing no signs of slowing despite the current economic situation.

The company has also built up an industry reputation for supplying Jouplast adjustable risers, which ensure decking and paving slabs sit even. As well as supplying to the leading DIY stores in the UK, the company has seen a massive boost in online sales during the recent lockdown, and has further plans to invest in a new 12,000 square foot storage facility to help facilitate the increased demand and continued growth.
